A brief introduction to living in Canada and the Canadian society

 

Canada is the second-largest country in the world by area and has a population of 38,526,760 according to Statistics Canada estimates as of January 1, 2022. The country has ten provinces and three territories, stretching from the Pacific to the Atlantic to the Arctic oceans.

Canada is often referred to as the “land of immigrants.” For over 200 years, millions of immigrants from a variety of ethnic and religious groups have migrated to Canada and helped to improve the country’s economy. Since 1970, most immigrants have come from Asia. According to the 2016 census, immigrants constitute 21.9% of the population. In 2021, 405,303 permanent residents were added, breaking the previous record from 1913 for the most newcomers in a year. Recently, India has been the largest source of new immigrants to Canada. The country aims to welcome 431645 new immigrants in 2022 and 447055 in 2023.
